For Horizon Mind, Michael Horswill and I chose to investigate the theme of horizon, expanding beyond landscape into metaphor and whittling the word down to its’ essence. This was a rich avenue of exploration for me. The symbol of horizon is much like my understanding of the present. I live in it. It exists always. But, my mind cannot grasp it before it has already become the past. Similarly, I know the horizon exists. I often see it, but I can never truly touch it as it is always shifting in relation to myself.
With my work for this show, I was thinking of horizon as a vital exchange, a meeting point between two entities or ideas. Not all horizons are the clearly defined slice of ocean meeting sky. Sometimes horizons are concealed, complex, frantic even. Nevertheless, the horizon represents a space of dependency, of simultaneous defining and refining.
