Geologically inspired by the region’s great columnar basalt formations, this interactive installation rests at the top of a hill in the center of the park. Custom perforated patterns resembling sedimentary layers filter light throughout the space resulting in an ever-changing interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. The anodized aluminum appears luminous, changing tones with the influence of the environment, while the alternate colors and patterns of the two intertwining halves creates visual layers as one moves in and around the piece.
An ADA accessible, stabilized basalt gravel pathway and warm LED lighting invites nighttime exploration and showcases the basalt boulder seating throughout the interior. This sculpture is an interactive and inspiring space for all ages and abilities to wander through and enjoy. The Seeking Place was commissioned by Spokane Arts and the Spokane Park Board-City of Spokane, Washington.
